Got an offer from Canadian University, now here is what you should do !

Over time I have seen that once students get an offer from a university, some of them treat it like the last step to their travel abroad, well its generally not the case, so for the benefit of all I thought of putting together some essential action points you can take once you receive your letter,

Putting first things first, make sure you read the Offer letter carefully and check the name of the student, expiry of Offer, deadline to make the fee payment, and conditions to be fulfilled, if any, for an Unconditional Offer. Post that you can follow these two steps,

Step 1: the first step is to pay tuition fees of the amount and in the manner, as mentioned in the Offer, before the deadline, to secure a seat.

Step 2: The next step would be to commence the visa process.

There are mainly two categories under which an application may be filed for a study visa:

  • SDS Category
  • Generic Category

SDS (Study Direct Stream) Category :

The SDS category entails a streamlined process of applying for a study visa for Indian students intending to study at a University or College in Canada.

It involves minimal compliance and documentation, and the visa outcome is swiftly received within 20 calendar days.

The following conditions need to be fulfilled for filling visa application under the SDS category:-

  1. Confirmation of admission to a full-time program at a University, College, Institute, or CEGEP is a Designated Learning Institution.
  2. An IELTS test result is not more than 24 months old, with a score of at least 6.0 overall with no band less than 6.0 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
  3. Purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD$ 10,000 to cover the living expenses for the first year of stay in Canada.
  4. Proof of payment of the tuition fee for one year.
  5. Upfront medical examination conducted at least one week before the submission of the visa application.
  6. All visa applications must be filed online only.

If a student intends to file the visa application under the SDS category, then a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is compulsory. A GIC may be made with any of the approved banks. They include Nova Scotia Bank, ICICI Bank, CIBC, HSBC, and SBI as well.

Generic Category:

If any of the conditions mentioned above are not fulfilled, then applying for a study visa may be filed under the Generic category.

The documentation and compliance to file a visa under this category are more than under SDS. The duration for the outcome may also extend to 45 to 60 days.
